what our school directs students say

"School Direct, although hard work and intense, has been an amazing, rewarding experience. It is definitely the way into teaching for HLTAs and experienced TAs. I have made some incredible friends and felt supported throughout."

Julia, School Direct student 2014–15.

"The School Direct course at St Mary’s provides a fantastic opportunity to learn from outstanding practitioners, gain invaluable classroom experience working alongside fantastic children and to become part of the wider school. You will be supported by all staff in school, including a mentor who knows you very well and therefore helps to provide a tailored training personal to your own targets to help you reach your full potential."

Olivia, School Direct student 2014–15.

Experience the Joy of Making a Difference

Teachers get incredible joy in seeing the difference they make as students gain new insights, become more interested in a subject and learn about themselves. Every day, teachers mould the future through impacting their students’ views and understandings. Teachers foster creativity, develop character, give students lenses with which to view the world and provide students with the skills they need to reach their potential and lead productive lives. As a teacher, you see the fruits of your efforts everyday as you use your intelligence and creativity to help students become excited and passionate about learning.

If you already know and feel this, then you are perhaps considering a career as a teacher. School Direct is one of the routes into teaching. St. Mary’s Horsforth Catholic Voluntary Academy is the lead school for The Bishop Wheeler Catholic Academy Trust in the School Direct partnership with Leeds Trinity University. Leeds Trinity is a well-established and widely respected institution with an excellent reputation for teacher training. Find out more information about Leeds Trinity University.

Our bespoke programme has been developed in conjunction with Leeds Trinity University with you in mind, ensuring that you receive high quality, hands-on training that will enable you to engage with a wide range of educational issues and help you to become a confident effective teacher.

The programme is one year full time and predominantly school based. It is intense and hard work but very rewarding. It leads to the award of PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status. You will be placed in two or more of our partner schools throughout your school placements, allowing you the opportunity to experience a variety of schools, settings, teachers and primary levels. You will receive also teaching from Leeds Trinity University academic staff. There are several other schools both in St. Mary’s Teaching School Alliance and in The Bishop Wheeler Catholic Academy Trust that you will be placed in.
